I made a visit to Bratislava when I was on a city break to Vienna. I took me just an hour by train to arrive at the Petrzalka railway station. By bus I crossed the Danube river to the old town, where I stayed in a beautiful hotel on one of the main squares. Bratislava is one of the youngest capitals in Europe, with a history that dates back even before the first settlements of the Celts and Romans in this area. Since the old town of Bratislava is rather small, the hightlights can be seen in one day. However, I decided to stay for two nights and take some time just to wander around. Next to the river Danube is a hill-top castle from where there are great views on the city. The UFO-bridge connects the old town with the Petrzalka area that houses many communist-era block housing complexes. Bratislava has a very pleasant medieval inner city with narrow winding streets centered on two squares. Just outside the old town there are the presidential palace and some churches to explore. After wandering the streets of the old town several times, I spend the afternoon of my second day at the riverbanks from the Danube river.
